Abstract:
Optical imaging has been a century-old practice in medicine for observing the the functional and structural information in biological tissue. However, conventional optical diagnostic methods involve the extraction of biological tissues from their in vivo environment, as the photon diffusion significantly deteriorates the imaging resolution in deep tissue. Recent developments in optical tomography methods, such as diffuse optical tomography (DOT) and photoacoustic tomography (PAT), have redefined the implementation of optical imaging in biomedicine.
Depending on surface optical illumination and detection, DOT traces the photon propagation by numerical models and recovers the spatial distribution of the optical properties along the photon propagation paths. DOT has improved the resolution of vivo optical imaging to sub-centimeter scale and been successfully implemented in breast cancer imaging, prostate cancer imaging and brain activity imaging.
PAT moves further into the physics of photon-tissue interaction by detecting the ultrasound (US) signals generated by optically-induced thermoexpansions. PAT can thereby achieve sub-millimeter resolution of heterogeneities in biological tissue comparable to that of US imaging. The US-compatibility and less computational intensiveness of PAT also enable the integration of PAT to clinical US platforms for real-time, PA-US parallel imaging.
This talk will review the physical principles of the optical tomography techniques and their implementation in the imaging of prostate cancer, fatty liver disease and arthritis.
